German Revolution
The 1918-1919 November Revolution that brought down the German Empire at the end of World War I and set the stage for the Weimar Republic. It began 29 October 1918 when sailors at Kiel mutinied; workers' and soldiers' councils spread the revolt across Germany, and on 9 November a republic was proclaimed and Wilhelm II fled to Holland. In its second, more violent stage, supporters of a parliamentary republic under Friedrich Ebert defeated those seeking a soviet-style council republic; the revolution is generally dated as ending with the Weimar Constitution of 11 August 1919.
