Karl Dönitz

September 16, 1891 – December 24, 1980

Karl Dönitz (1891–1980) was a German naval officer and politician who succeeded Adolf Hitler as head of state of Germany after Hitler's suicide in April 1945. He held the position until the dissolution of the Flensburg Government, about two weeks after Germany's unconditional surrender to the Allies. As Supreme Commander of the Navy from 1943, he played a major role in the naval history of World War II.
