Operation Overlord

Operation Overlord was the codename for the Battle of Normandy, the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe launched on 6 June 1944 (D-Day). After a 1,200-plane airborne assault, more than 5,000 vessels carried nearly 160,000 troops across the English Channel, with Americans landing at Utah and Omaha, the British at Sword and Gold, and the Canadians at Juno. Commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the operation put more than two million Allied troops in France by the end of August 1944.
