Contemporaries

In the Vosges Mountains of France on 24 October 1944, the 1st Battalion of the 141st Infantry Regiment (36th Infantry Division), a Texas National Guard unit, was cut off and surrounded by German forces during the Battle of the Vosges. The Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team fought through to relieve the trapped battalion after several days of heavy combat. The rescue is remembered as one of the costliest and most celebrated actions of the 442nd, one of the most decorated units in U.S. Army history.
