Second Boer War

October 11, 1899 – May 31, 1902

War between the British Empire and the Boer republics, 1899-1902. Britain occupied both republics after early Boer victories; Boer fighters then waged a guerrilla campaign, answered with scorched earth and camps in which 26,000 Boer civilians died. The Treaty of Vereeniging ended the war in May 1902; the republics became British colonies, later the Union of South Africa.
