Beer Hall Putsch
November 8–9, 1923 · Munich
Failed coup of 8-9 November 1923 in Munich, Bavaria, led by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and General Erich Ludendorff against Germany's Weimar government. After storming the Burgerbraukeller beer hall, some two thousand Nazis marching on the Feldherrnhalle were stopped by a police cordon, leaving 15 Nazis, four police officers and one bystander dead. Hitler was arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to five years in Landsberg Prison, where he dictated Mein Kampf; after nine months' imprisonment he turned to pursuing power through legal means.
