The United States Army (U.S. Army) is the land service branch of the United States Armed Forces, designated as the army of the United States in the Constitution. Founded in 1784, it succeeded the Continental Army formed in 1775 during the American Revolutionary War, and it is the largest military branch, with a projected headcount of 1,005,725 soldiers for FY2022. It fought the American Indian Wars, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; the Civil War was its costliest conflict with over 350,000 casualties. The Army is headed by the civilian secretary of the Army and the military chief of staff of the Army, a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and operates combat vehicles including the M1 Abrams main battle tank and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
