World War I
July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918
Global war fought 28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918 between the Allied and Central Powers, killing an estimated 15–22 million people. Triggered by Gavrilo Princip's assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, it ended with the 11 November armistice after Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated; the Treaty of Versailles settled the peace and created the League of Nations.
